Psalm 47: Reach!

May 14th, 2012 by Shepherd | Posted in Blog | No Comments »

Emerson said that beauty is God’s handwriting and the creation of beauty is art. This Sunday as we celebrate Music Sunday, we remember that our music, like all our art, is the story of our reaching to transcend ourselves and read what God has written in our hearts and minds. I hope our music finds a way to open that portal and that the light of God’s faithfulness shines through. What could be more beautiful or more worth reaching for?

John 15:9-17, Simplicity Itself

May 7th, 2012 by Shepherd | Posted in Blog | No Comments »

The message is so simple: Love One Another. But if the instructions are so simple, why haven’t we followed them yet? We know what we’re supposed to do, why don’t we do it? We spend endless hours in the church talking about the whys and why nots. Maybe we should spend more time doing. We know we love one another when we get together and spend time with one another. We know we love one another when we value one another’s presence and let each other know we are happy to be together. We know we love one another when we care about what is going on in each other’s lives and when we share our hopes and dreams with one another. We know that when we do these things, friends become family and strangers become friends. Come together. Welcome. Care. Simplicity itself.

John 15:1-8 Again, CHOOSE LIFE

April 30th, 2012 by Shepherd | Posted in Blog | Comments Off

Jesus repeated this theme over and over again: LIVE. Live fully, live connected, live in love. Without connection and love, life is dust. With love and connection, life is a bountiful harvest. To be connected to God, we must be connected to Christ. To be connected to Christ we must be connected to one another. To be connected to one another, we must love one another. The message is easy to understand. Living the message is hard. But the alternative is ashes and the reward is abundance. Which would you choose?

John 10:11-18 Belonging

April 23rd, 2012 by Shepherd | Posted in Blog | Comments Off

The shepherd metaphor is both comforting and a little disconcerting. Jesus loves us. We are his own. But we are not his only. We know his voice, but others answer to him as well. Belonging to the good shepherd is not exclusive. It turns out we have strangers for brothers and sisters.
He is willing to lay down his life for all of us, but not just because of his love for all of us. It turns out he is willing primarily because of his love for God.
We are not the center of the universe, but we are loved as much as if we were. We don’t have to do anything at all, but we are asked to give our everything. What grace! And what an awesome responsibility!
